In March 2002, Nathan Kelly was approached by the director of The National Portrait Gallery of Australia, and this portrait of Sir John Gorton was accepted in to the permanent collection making Nathan Kelly the youngest artist (at the age of 25) to have an artwork in the permanent collection of The National Portrait Gallery.

This portrait is to feature in the exhibition "The story so far... National Portrait Gallery Collection" at the Schaeffer Gallery and Senate Gallery 7 June to 25 August 2002.
