In August 2003 Nathan David Kelly was commisioned by The Australian War Memorial to create three images of the commanders in chief of the Australian armed forces in the Iraq conflict.

Brigadier Maurie McNairn was in charge of the Australian armed forces throughout their involvement in the conflict whilst Group Captain Geoff Brown was in charge of the Australian Air Force and Captain Peter Jones was in charge of the Australian Naval personnel and was at times in command of The United Nations Naval blockade in the Persian Gulf.
