Focus on a big break

A photographer from Strathfield is a semi-finalist in the Nescafe Big Break competition.

Nathan Kelly's ambitious photographis project could be given a $20.000 funding injection if he is selected a winner on November 11.

Fascinated by people and faces, rather than landscapes and trees, the 20-year-old began work on a series of portraits of succesful Australians.

He plans to put 300 images together for publication.

A third-year student at the Sydney College of the Arts, Kelly admits winning the Big Break would be a "big help" in realising his dream.

"Photography is expensive, so it would definitely make things a lot easier," Kelly said.

An irritation with Australia's cultural cringe was an impetus for the project.

"I think it's sad that Michael Jordan is the number one sports star in his country, and there are all these people who have done massive things but they are not recognised," he said.

Actors, writers, musicians and political leaders will all figure in the completed works, but Kelly is reluctant to reveal names.

While he hoped to broaden his experience with the photographic medium when he graduated, he said photographing people would always be his primary inspiration.

"I do understand many things in life but I don't understand people," he said.

"There is that connection you can have and if you take one moment from their life then you have something."
